2nd Annual Tutorial on Clinical Cytopathology

A full one year has passed since we had our inaugural “1st Annual Tutorial on Clinical Cytopathology”. The feedback and evaluations from the attendees have been most supportive and encouraging. We are delighted to announce that the Cytopathology faculty of the Istanbul University (Istanbul) and The Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore, USA) has finalized the plans for our “2nd Annual Tutorial on Clinical Cytopathology” to be held once again in the exciting metropolis of Istanbul, Turkey on September 13-14, 2013. We have a brand new program, new lectures and two new speakers, including a special guest faculty - Dr. Philippe VIELH, President of the IAC and Director of Cytopathology at the IGR in Paris, France.
As we witnessed in the 1st tutorial, Cytopathology has rapidly evolved into a clinically-oriented discipline and plays a pivotal role in timely and accurate patient management. Recent years have seen an exponential growth of newer techniques (liquid-based specimen preparation, automation, immuno markers and various molecular tests) being applied to supplement morphologic evaluation of cytologic specimens. Additionally, there have been several significant revisions of tumor classification schemes in surgical pathology which directly affects the way the diagnoses of such tumors are reported in cytopathology. The introduction of The Bethesda System for reporting Thyroid Cytopathology has resulted in new questions in the minds of practicing pathologists.
This unique cytopathology tutorial plans to bring in the BEST of the two GREAT institutions during the two-day course by offering an expert analysis of diagnostic issues in selected areas of Clinical Cytopathology. The tutorial will expose general pathologists, cytopathologists, pathology trainees and cytotechnologists to selected problem areas, as well as serve as a refresher course for more experienced attendees. The course faculty of international stature needs no introduction. The breadth of the selected topics includes salivary glands, thyroid, lung, breast, lymph nodes, pancreas, serous cavity effusions and urinary cytology.
The course will be taught not only by conventional didactic lectures but the learning experience of the attendees will be enriched by an interactive approach, a high-resolution video microscopy will follow each lecture session. All the educational tools will adequately ensure that the participants get the necessary exposure and guidance to interpret not only the common but also the rare disease entities. Each afternoon session will end with an interactive presentation of challenging unknown cases with active participation of the attendees. The latter session with a case-based approach is guaranteed to stimulate even the most tired brains at the end of the day.
