International forum of Financial Systems (IFFS)

INVITATION

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

As we are all aware, the global financial system, until 1970s, has played a fundamental role in the accelerated development of the world economy through, inter alia, channelling of financial resources into productive investments. However, with the structural changes in the international financial architecture, particularly after 1970s, the role of financial institutions in the world economy has changed dramatically. Financial institutions have grown larger and larger, which helped them take on more risk and, as the recent global financial crisis has shown us in a clear way, at great cost to society.

Against this backdrop, we will organize and host the “International Forum on Financial Systems” which will be held from 11 to 12 September 2013 in Istanbul, Republic of Turkey. The Forum has already acquired the privilege to be held under the auspices of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey. It is organised by the Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC), a subsidiary organ of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), in cooperation with the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) Group, Participation Bank Association of Turkey (TKBB), Borsa Ýstanbul, and the Independent Industrialists and Businessmen's Association (MÜSÝAD).

Themed “Sustainable Finance for Sustainable Development”, the two-day Forum will provide a distinct opportunity for critical and objective examination of the existing global financial system, particularly the structural problems undermining its ability to prevent crises of regional as well as global scale. Diverse views will be exchanged among world-renowned intellectuals including eminent economists, statesmen, heads of international organisations as well as industry practitioners on the future of the global financial system. As the existing structure of the global economic and financial system is still being questioned among intellectual and political discourse, the Forum is also expected to stimulate new financial and economic thinking while exploring the potential avenues for building a financial system which is at the service both of the productive economy and the interests of all classes of the society.
